The BUCS official charity, ‘Right to Play’ are attempting to raise enough funds to offer 12,000 children an education for a full year by cycling from Edinburgh to London.
‘Right to Play’ is an international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to improve health, develop life skills, and foster peace for children and communities in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world. Working in both the humanitarian and development context, ‘Right to Play’ trains local community leaders as Coaches to deliver programs in more than 20 countries affected by war, poverty, and disease in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
One of the 101 riders taking part was Neil Mosley, Head of Sport at Imperial College. Last year Neil cycled from London to Paris successfully raising funds for charity. This year he’s took up the challenge to cycle from Edinburgh to London in raising funds for the ‘Right to Play’.
Neil embarked on the cycle ride from 17th – 23rd August to raise money for the Innovative charity improving the lives of the world’s most disadvantaged children. A grueling task – 500 miles in only 6 days means cycling on the saddle a blistering 8 hours a day. Neil trained hard, putting in plenty of hours in the gym as well as cycling to and from work. Not only was the training difficult, especially in the good old British weather, but Neil set a personal target to raise £3000 to contribute to the ‘Right to Play’.
Cyclist Mark Cavendish started the cycle ride from under Edinburgh castle and the cyclists travelled across the UK to finish outside Buckingham Palace six days later. The trip took the cyclists over hills, along coasts and through national parks. Experienced and amateur riders will form the group taking part in this ride in achieving the target of funding the 12,000 children.
