Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is our 2020 chosen charity

The stigma around mental health issues and suicide has decreased massively over the years, but the rates of suicides and mental health issues are constantly rising. We want this to change. This is why we’re happy to announce that our chosen charity for 2020 is Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). CALM is a leading movement against suicide, which is sadly the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK and the cause of around 18 deaths every day.

“The selection of the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) as the 2020 charity of the year rung a chord with the team, as we recognise mental health wellbeing as an important component of a great place to work. We believe the key to creating a supportive environment is truly understanding the people within it – their attitudes, behaviours, and needs. We are looking forward to raising funds and awareness throughout the year.”

Penny Southwood – Managing Director

At Xn, we believe that our greatest asset is our employees. Their continuing health and wellbeing is a crucial element in the happiness of the team and the success of the company.

We’ve chosen to join the campaign to start breaking down the barriers that lead people to suicide and get them the help they need so that it doesn’t get to the point of a crisis, as we believe that nobody should feel alone, especially in the workplace. Talking about your mental health shouldn’t be a negative issue and instead should be something people are confident doing, especially when things get tough. Throughout 2020, we’ll be holding events to raise as much money and awareness as we can for this great cause.

Mental Health First Aid

Compared to physical health, mental wellbeing is often a hard issue to identify due to it being very specific to the person experiencing it and, in most cases, can very easily go unnoticed. Therefore, our Senior and Middle management staff have been enrolled in an MHFA course so that they have the skills and understanding to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues. This means that they can not only support themselves but anyone at Xn who needs to talk about any issues they have, in a safe and supportive conversation.

On top of this, our Sales Director, Jason Watts, and Bid Manager, Ieuan Williams, also attended a 2-day course so that they could gain a deeper understanding of what mental health is and the effects it can have on an individual’s wellbeing.

Here is what Ieuan had to say about the course:

“The Mental Health First Aid course is the best course I have ever attended, bar none. It provided an in-depth understanding of mental health with practical examples, real case studies, and interesting discussions. Thought-provoking exercises highlighted factors that can affect wellbeing with practical sessions to help spot the triggers and signs of mental illness and how to step in, reassure, and support a person in distress. Supporting resources included mental health first aid workbook, videos, infographics, statistics and reference aids. The two-day course covered everything from alcohol, drugs, and anxiety disorders through to risk factors and symptoms for depression. The course was stimulating, great fun at times, and was led by inspirational professional mental health practitioners.”

We’re extremely proud of how involved and supportive our team has already been around this, and we can’t wait to see all the incredible things we do to raise as much money as we can over the course of the year.

Keep an eye out on our social channels for updates on what we’re doing to fundraise.

And remember, always be kind.
